After last week’s article about preparing for a pandemic, we have come up with something even more depressing! Behold….. How to prepare for an apocalypse! With this guide, you’d be able to survive in the harshest situations(no guarantees), so buckle up, and start preparing!

Preparing in advance

Gather enough supplies for 90 days. A major event like this would not be short term, since the whole world would likely be fall apart. However, hopefully, having enough supplies for three months would be enough to get you settled and going with your new, self-sufficient habits. The more time you spend dedicated to planning, the better chance you have to survive. When prepping the supplies, think: basic survival, and getting by.

Basic survival items:

  • Jugs of water
  • Canned goods
  • Vacuum sealed goods
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Medications(First aid kit)
  • A weapon you know how to use
  • A knife
  • Warm, long sleeved clothing(if you live in Canada)
  • Carrying bag

Supplies for getting by:

  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Matches
  • Pots and pans
  • Plastic utensils
  • Ropes
  • Map
  • Permanent markers
  • Change of clothes
  • Can opener
  • Lighters
  • Camp stove and propane
  • Hatchet or axe
  • First aid book
  • Sunglasses
  • Duct tape
  • Glow sticks
  • Boots
  • Extra pants
  • Smartphone
  • Water filters
  • Comfort items(if you’re a sissy)(that was a joke)

Also, an additional note: Prepare for the messier sides of the long-term! What I mean by that, are:

  • Toilet paper
  • Menstrual products(even if you’re a guy!)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Shovel
  • Bleach
  • Soap and shampoo

In ADDITION to all of this, set up a communication system using radios with family and friends! You should also learn some basic survival skills, such as how to shoot a gun, and how to hunt.

As Soon as Apocalypse Strikes

As soon as apocalypse strikes, immediately grab everything you’ve prepared, your family, and get out of here. However, before you leave grab a long-sleeved shirt and some pants to protect your skin from predators. If you have time, grab a pair of boots! Make sure your clothing are comfortable before you flee.

Come up with an escape plan! You’ll probably be better off staying inside, at least for the short term. Try to stay in the basement, as a foot of concrete could keep anything away! Once you’ve found a safe shelter, the next step would be to find food.

Stock up! DASH to the grocery store, and take everything you can find. Grab a candy bar and start chowing! Think in terms of weeks, not days. Always prioritize what would last the longest, what takes up the least space, and what would be the easiest to carry. If everything has been taken, just take what is left. You’ll need everything to survive! In terms of water, try to get as much as you can, or else you’ll be drinking your pee in no time!

Another important note to keep in mind is to not flash your gun like you do your BMW! Conceal your weapons and go on the defensive. When it comes to humans, there is no place for intelligence and culture now! Do what you need to do. However, it is important to assemble a team! Humans need connections, so you shouldn’t be too picky with your friends. If you’re alone right now, keep a lookout for lights and fires at night. If you see one or more, consider making some new friends, but only if it’s worth it. How far is the campfire? How quickly could you get there? What would you risk by leaving? Sometimes, it would be better just to be alone, for now.

I hope you’ve learned a lot through this experience! Here if my final and last tip, and arguably the most important one! Always stay positive! This would arguably be the hardest thing, especially if you’re alone or wounded. However, this hardship would be easier to handle if you remain optimistic. If you have children, that’s one more reason! And as always, happy surviving!
